Early Signs of Diabetes You Shouldn't Ignore

Frequent urination, unexplained thirst, fatigue that doesn't go away. These seemingly ordinary symptoms could be your body's early warning signals for diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions in India, affecting over 77 million adults. Yet many people live with it for years before receiving a diagnosis — because the early signs are easy to dismiss as ordinary tiredness or stress.

The Early Warning Signs

Frequent urination (polyuria)

When blood sugar is elevated, the kidneys work overtime to filter and absorb the excess glucose. What they can't process is excreted through urine — which is why frequent urination, especially at night, is one of the first signs.

Unexplained thirst (polydipsia)

Closely linked to frequent urination: as your body loses fluid, it signals thirst. If you're drinking more than usual and still feel parched, take note.

Fatigue that doesn't go away

Without insulin functioning properly, your cells can't absorb glucose for energy — even when your blood sugar is high. This leaves you feeling chronically tired, despite adequate sleep.

Blurred vision

High blood sugar causes the lens of the eye to swell, temporarily changing your ability to focus. This is often an early, overlooked symptom.

Slow-healing cuts and bruises

Elevated glucose impairs circulation and immune function, making it harder for the body to repair wounds. If minor cuts take unusually long to heal, it's worth investigating.

Tingling or numbness in hands and feet

This is peripheral neuropathy — nerve damage caused by prolonged high blood sugar. Its presence suggests diabetes may have been undiagnosed for some time.

Unexplained weight loss

Particularly common in Type 1 diabetes. When cells can't use glucose, the body begins breaking down fat and muscle for energy.

When to Get Tested

If you recognise two or more of these symptoms, book a fasting blood sugar test and an HbA1c (which shows your average blood sugar over 3 months). These are simple blood tests available at any clinic.

You should also consider proactive screening if you are over 45, have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, or have had gestational diabetes.

Early detection makes an enormous difference. With proper management — dietary changes, exercise, and medication when needed — most people with Type 2 diabetes can live full, healthy lives and significantly reduce their risk of complications.

At Good Care Polyclinic, our diabetes care team offers comprehensive screening and personalised management plans. Walk in or book an appointment — same-day HbA1c results are available.
